There was a time when this trick (aptly called the "merry go round") was included in almost every elephant act. Now I can't remember the last I saw one.
And you'll never in a thousand years guess what tune was invariably played!
I asked my wife why the elephants should look so filthy and she said it was probably too cold to wash them that morning.
It was the Detroit Shrine date in the dead of Winter, maybe she is right.

And, I'll be looking forward to that sub-zero weather, rather reluctantly, as I will be landing at the wonderful Detroit Metro Airport, about 3:00pm today.
