Chic can probably help with this, but this looks like a "hard" wall steel cage and the "flexible" top is fastened to the side walls. Was this a common set up (don't remember seeing pictures of this type of set up, usually open top) or was this a special set up because of the act?

Yes Larry this was very likely a
welded steel rod arena in 1939
probably 6' by 12' sections held
together with vertical bars with
bent fingers to capture the flat
edges of each section & the full
round woven top net was easier
to attach & support by the same
cable that hung the light tub
The more recent perimeter top
nets were lighter & cheaper but
were also more easily tangled
The entry enclosure could be set
or removed without the need to
open the arena
This entry cage reminds me of the
last year or so of Beatty's act
when he had to buy time until old
Pharoah managed to chase him out
& pounce upon the exit door with
great enthusiasm (almost)
