Common & finishing nails used to be (& maybe still are) given the "d" for the British penny along with a number representing their length as in 10d (10 penny) nail which is 3 inches long (nuf sed) There were 240 old pennies to the Pound Sterling (right Sue)
In my youth (so long ago) a five dollar bill in circus lingo was called a pound note as that was roughly the value of a British Pound Sterling & currently the New Pound is worth $1.58
