Jules in 1969, his last year at the St. Louis Zoo. I remember the Levi jacket with his glasses and a pack of little cigars in the pocket. He would wear the bolo tie when he did the act. When it came time for the "head in the mouth" Jules would tuck the tie inside his shirt. One day he either didn't tuck it away or didn't do it well and strings fell down the lion's throat. The lion, a normally good, reliable animal, gagged and bit down on Jules head. Jules pulled his bleeding, sweaty head out to the screams of the audience, sure they had witnessed his demise. Has usual he finished the act then probably cleaned the wound with bleach and water or some other makeshift disinfectant. He was a tough old guy.

Some young guy attempted a sea lion show to replace Jules in 1970. Jules took four leopards and two lion to the Glen Oak Zoo in Peoria, IL in 1970. He died in January 1971. I still think of him, volumes of stories and advice.
