Jules after his return to the St. Louis Zoo in 1962. (Easy to spot with the solid wall background of the Lion Arena.) The lion is Solomon, better known as Pee-Wee to his friends. Pee-Wee did several tricks in the act in addition to playing the King of Beasts. Solomon died in 1966. I have the cane, wish I had the crown and glasses.
I've heard the Jerry Ervin story too (from Dorothy Kelly for one). Jules legal signature was Jules E. Jacot. I called him Jerry Ervin a few times kidding around and he seemed to know the name.He also would say he joined the circus in 1908 when he ran off from the Foreign Legion.
