Jules Jacot (From Ken Kawata)

Buckles,
Here's William Conway's observations (I think he was a student intern then) on Jules Jacot I received today, in response to Jacot photos, culled from your Blog and forwarded to him.
All best, Ken

Dear Ken,
Terrific pictures of Jacot! Many thanks.
He was a remarkably athletic man and continued to work with the big cats until he appeared quite elderly. I had several memorable experinces while helping him. Once, watching him train a leopard to charge him (and stop just in time) on the end of a safety rope held by a large somewhat 'limited' keeper, a telephone rang. The keeper dropped the rope to get the telephone! What happened next was very special, as what happened after that to the keeper.

I knew Jules predecessor, Kostial, father of the famous chimp keeper Michael Kostial, as well. But Jacot was old time circus tradition.

All best,

Bill

Good Lord Ken, I've been well-acquainted with Bill Conway for years and never knew of this aspect of his life. He is quite a fine and remarkable gentleman. Thank you so much.

Best, Paul

I want to know what happened with the leopard!

For readers who may not be familiar with Bill Conway, he was the preeminent director of the Bronx zoo after having also served the St Louis zoo.
