The St. Louis Zoo scans that Buckles recently posted
reminded me that I have the three VIEW-MASTER reels featuring the
Zoo’s three performing animal shows (lions-chimps-elephants) from the early
1950s. All three of these reels must
have sold quite well, since they turn up quite frequently on eBay.
Since they were all made using Kodachrome film, the colors are still as bright
and fresh as if they had been photographed yesterday. Here are the images from the lion show reel,
which was released in 1951.

Black & white movie footage of Jules Jacot presenting the St. Louis Zoo lion show is in the Castle Films short subject CARNIVAL AT THE ZOO. (This might be posted on line at YouTube.) Used 8mm and 16mm copies of this title turn up on eBay all the time.
I wonder if this, shown in the photo, was a regular feature of the act.
It is similar to what Gunther tried with a tiger and from what I read gave up on it. Just wondering.
Dennis, never saw this act but it probably was. Jules alway had lions holding props in their mouths and the Zoo was big on photo opportunities.
