I remember on the Cole Show, the juggler in the Side Show did this identical routine and closed with top hats.

It's great to see these photos, and W.C. Fields was a great juggler, and all jugglers did these routines. To be a little bit different, Dad did the three cigar box one with two large spools and a large ball of yarn. Peggy later took over the routine. The cigar box "pyramid" building was often done with polished blocks shaped liked bricks only narrower. Then balanced on the chin with an inverted glass of water on top. Knock out the blocks and catch the glass. I don't have photos (there are probably some around) The props are in my garage. Ruth was working on a "suitcase act" when she was in the fatal accident. She was the only one who could do chin balancing. I have a nephew in KC who does chin balancing. Did have some photos on you-tube. (Buster Hockett.) The jugglers bulletin has photos of many of these tricks with the performers who did them, but they don't show up on their site.
The Dailey Show had a juggler in 1947 that later showed up on Sullivan. His Hat Routine was fantastic.
I don't juggle much anymore, and when I do I use the small padded hoops Dad made for the chimp. I have six, but nobody to pass with. My clubs are too heavy, and the bounce is gone from my LaCross Balls (and me).
