I saw the cats loaded into a tunnel car in 1970. My immediate concern was, how the hell does a cagehand get in there to at least give water? There was no way to wield a cage rake for cleaning, and upon asking, I was told there was no lighting in the car to allow for safe cage work, even if it could be tried.
Charlys tigers rode under the bus and cars and it was very close quarters..every water stop I would bang my head so I traded with Rob Bush and I would water the lions and he watered the tigers...sometimes cages were loaded with shavings for longer hauls..

Looking through this tunnel car
the next looks to be a bilevel
(huh Gary)
Nowadays the auto transport cars
are covered bi & trilevel based
on which routes they travel due
to height restrictions (similar
cars are used on the AutoTrain)

There was sufficient room to get
by the cages in the tunnel cars
I recall Charly's tigers being
watered during the water stops
by flashlight but not very often
They were fed during long trips
Cleanouts were something else
At least 1 tunnel car had panels
that could open or slide to gain
access to the cages

Thanks Gary for the verification
At times I question my memories
Where were the lions loaded Gary
