What started out as a simple engineering
problem soon took on almost mythical proportions as Patterson and his mostly
Indian workforce were systematically hunted for food (and for sport) by two
maneless male lions. (For aesthetic
reasons the lions that portrayed them in the movie were fully-maned.) “Hundreds
of men fell victims to these savage creatures, whose very jaws were steeped in
blood,” wrote a worker on the railway. “Bones, flesh, skin and blood, they
devoured all, and left not a trace behind them.”
[The lions might have been maneless due to environmental variables, although maneless male lions are not unique to Tsavo.] |
