Years of research brought me what is possibly the most reliable story of how Clyde Beatty learned of the death of his wife, Harriett. He had left their private 61 Car to arrive for his matinee performance. Harriett had not been well, and had not worked the show for an extended time. When Beatty was about to be announced, word was on the lot that Mrs. Beatty had been discovered dead by the car's porter. They held the news until after Beatty had worked. It was then decided, due to a long personal friendship, Johnny Cline would be the one to take the news to Beatty.
