Seeing this still from Greatest show with Jimmy Stewart and some answers were brought up in a interview with him on the TCM on a Johnny Carson interview with Jimmy.
He was in England and found out DeMille was going to shoot Greatest show on earth so Jimmy sent Demille a wire that he wanted to be in the movie.
Demille said come on so Jimmy had to join later as something was wrong with Gloria.
He joined in Philadelphia.
So Jimmy put on the clown outfit and went to Demille and said what do I do and Demille go act that is what I am paying you for.
So Emmit and Lou said follow us and do what we tell you to do.
Jimmy said thanks to them both and the rest is history.

One story holds that DeMille was less than caring about Gloria Stewart's illness when it delayed Jimmy's start date. He was irate about having to re-write the shooting schedule, thinking Jimmy was doing it to play "movie star". When CB learned Gloria's illness was serious at the time, he finally offered "get well" wishes, but never got over Jimmy's delay.
