Sally had performed the morning of the fire, shooting scenes for MOON OVER BURMA, starring Dorothy Lamour. As the fire erupted quickly, Sally, Queenie, Dutch, and Bonnie were on the picket line. Seventeen elephants under the command of Cheerful Gardner were successfully moved to safety. Stories conflict about which elephant panicked from the fire, and ran into an arroyo. This elephant was led out by handlers, and was then said to be Queenie. She was shot due to extensive burns. Sally, in various accounts I have, also died from burns, not from merciful gunshots. In her flight, Queenie stumbled and broke the Compound's main water line, which badly crippled efforts to fight the fire. There is far more history to the fire of July 9-10, 1940, but we are addressing the fates of Sally and Queenie for now.
