Cheerful Gardner and "Joe".
Taken in 1939 when 20 surplus Ringling elephants were quartered and sold off while stored at Baldwin Park, Calif.
D.R. Miller told the story of he and his brother Kelly driving out to Baldwin Park to buy their first elephant. He said that they all looked ferocious and explained to Cheerful they had no elephant experience whatever so he picked out a gentle old cow named "Hattie".
