The informative and all-knowing publication of the Circus Historical Society, "Bandwagon," discusses "Seat Wagons and Canvas Spools, Mechanization of the Circus" by Fred D. Pfening, Jr., in its November-December 1994 issue. It's great for many photographs and descriptive details on the seat wagons, seating and canvas spools used by wagon and motorized circuses.
Thanks, DICK: That was the issue I was looking for. The details we owe to the studious Fred Pfening, Jr., who makes us feel like once we read this, we've studied an operating manual.

This system proved to be unsuccessful since the canvas was quickly damaged from being drug back and forth each day.

This is the article that mentions that seating with backs and foot rests was patented in 1872 by (ahem) David Price.
