Back when I was in college, I had a part-time job in a little fine arts theater located just off campus. When the theater’s regular projectionist found out that I was a circus fan, he told me that, during World War II, he had served in the Coast Guard and was stationed in Sarasota. In 1944, he wanted to return to Ohio to get married, but obtaining long distance transportation during the war years was almost impossible unless you had some sort of high priority. Right at that time the Ringling train was getting ready to pull out for Akron, where it was to reopen in the Rubber Bowl. The head porter on the circus train was also in the projectionists’ union and was able to get my projectionist friend a ride on the Ringling train for the trip north.
