After checking the #^&*$#^ internet I now know why I remember Tom Mix (who died 2 years before I was born) so well. . .because "his" radio program continued for 10 years after he passed away.
Very few people today realize how big Tom Mix was. His stardom became a sensation during his silent film days as a Western star. His fame made him idolized by boys and girls around the world, many years before Gene Autry and Roy Rogers enjoyed similar careers. I remember his radio show in the '50s, and was amazed to discover he had died in 1940. I have his autograph on the dinner menu of the 1929 Sells-Floto performers banquet, for which he served as chairman.
