This was the disputed turnover
year as shown by the credits
(Only 1 Feld listed) & a very
interesting mixed team effort
When the dust settled it was a
very different vision
Written history depends on who
has published the textbooks
I enjoy reading or hearing the
gospel from folks who weren't
participants or really there
"Ring" & "Ling" ring a bell so
to speak but I'm not so sure
about the other 2 Mike
According to the 1969 Annual Report the names were:
Ring, the Gorilla
Ling, the Tiger
Baby Barnum, the Elephant and
Bumble Bailey, the Clown.
I was on the Red Unit in '69 and was in the tiger costume for the promo pictures. I know the character names, but am not totally sure of which was which. I believe they were: Gorilla-"Ring",Tiger-"Ling",Elephant-"Barnum", and Clown-"Bailey". Very imaginitive, yes?
"Production Supervisor" clearly
wasn't Irvin's 1st choice but
it only lasted that 1st year
The costumes for all of these 4 characters appear in the View-Master set of reels that was photographed on the Red Unit in 1969. (Those images were posted on the Blog some years ago and should be in the archives.) The Felds had hopes of these four characters appearing in a Saturday morning cartoon show that make them as famous as Mickey, Donald, Goofy, etc. Nothing ever came of it, however.
