Captain Marvel #1 (From Eric Beheim)

I was interested to read that Captain Marvel is part of the Felds’ new super heroes show. Originally created in 1939, the Captain was, at one time, even more popular than Superman! He was also the first comic book superhero to make it to the big screen in the 1941 serial The Adventures of Captain Marvel (which many fans consider to be one of the best serials ever made.) The role of Captain Marvel was played to perfection by Tom Tyler, whom Buckles mentions every so often.

Many many years ago I did the

special effects on a film shot

in NY with the original title

of "Captain Avenger" starring

John Ritter but it was released

with the title "Hero At Large"

He portrayed an out of work

actor doing publicity in the

caped crusader costume of the

title character in a soon to be

released (mythical) film

Republic Pictures had planned to do a 15-chapter Superman serial in 1940. Just before it was scheduled to go into production, however, the deal fell through. The script (which had already been written) was revised and it was released as THE MYSTERIOUS DOCTOR SATAN. (That’s the one where Dorothy Herbert appears in a supporting role.)

The flying sequences for THE ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN MARVEL were done by Republic’s special effects wizards Howard and Theodore Lydecker, who used a life-size papier-mâché dummy suspended on pulleys from a wire. Filmed under natural light as it slid down the wire, the effect on screen was most realistic. Adding to the illusion were the life-action flying leaps by stuntman David Shape (doubling Tom Tyler.) After a while, you begin to think that the Captain really could fly!
