Another July Mishap! #2

I thought it was great!
They spotted the coaches by the Train Depot right down town close to a couple of movies and set up the cook house right on the lawn.

A journal or journal box is the

enclosure at the ends of axles

that house the bearings & need

constant lubrication or they

will burn up as a "hot box"

Early versions needed manual

oiling fairly often but newer

units have a reservoir for the

heavy lube that automatically

keeps the bearings wet for an

extended period of time

The circus train crew would have been responsible for keeping the journal boxes checked for packing and lube oil, to make sure there were no hot boxes.

Not only "would have been" but

they still are Bob & oiling is

easy but the changing of wheels

is really tough & back in my

days we carried spares of a few

different sizes for different

vintage cars

In order to put any car on any

track you don't own each car is

required to pass the federal

mandated inspection each year

but journals & wheels get more

attention during the year

It was a faulty wheel that was

the cause of the 94 wreck that

took Ted's life

In the early 60s the 1 & only

RBBX train carried 17 cars

I'm told that each of their 2

trains carry nearly 60 each

Another life was lost, also. Ceslee Conkling was 28, and had been a featured clown over there for 3 years.
