More Ed Sullivan #4

Louie Stern liked to have the Sullivan show on his resume and appreciating the effort instructed Al Dobritch to have the check made out to us.
Enclosed is a copy of the check minus the Agent's fee which caused Chic to later comment when sending this today, "Worth every cent!"
As if that was't bad enough we received a bill from the IRS for the balance.
Needless to say the Elephant Empress had an utterance or two over this matter.
Louie was the greatest guy I ever worked for, he didn't want to be bothered with details, I would go to him and say, "Morgan Berry has a baby elephant for sale....." and he would say "Kid, you do that but explain it to Ross Paul then walk away.
He handled the Dobritch matter the same way.

And how much did Louie Stern pay you?

I remember the story, I just want to hear it again.

I can remember when you could buy

a cup of coffee for that amount

Tiny royalty or residual payments

in theater are usually blamed on

a general manager's sharp pencil

Over the years the terms "Gross"

& "Net" now have several versions

That was just the residual. We got a little more than that. But not much more. The main thing was doing the "Ed Sullivan Show." All the greats stood on that stage. It was a terrific feeling. And as for our pay in those days, we were paid quite well. It is rude to ask some one how much they were paid. If some one wanted to tell you, that is one thing. But you do not ask! We put the residual check on the blog as a joke. As any one can see we didn't cash it. It is worth more as a conversation piece. And the company that bought out the Ed Sullivan Show was "SOFA" not "SOFIA.".....Barbara.....

Barbara - I thought there was a time where Louie sent you to do the tv show and he kept the money. That's what I meant. I do remember Buckles telling me that you folks had to pay the IRS. Perhaps I am mixing up the stories. No offense intended. Mike

Mike, the "money thing" was was "quite normal". It's why we left the Bailey show in the spring of 1948 after Mack worked the Ken Murry Blackouts all winter. Also Suese made his own flyer for Marko for personal appearances. Dad, Lew Henderson, was very surprised when he found out.

Probably somebody was paid for all the morning appearances we made over the years.

Funny thing about Sullivan. Early on he got "mad" because Mack wouldn't dress up like Santa Clause.

Never really got over it, and it showed.

We will be looking forward to it. Patrick has received four more awards for his writing, directing, music, etc. Of course I am proud of him. He is presently writing a new script for the school. He stays very busy. Have a good time up north..... Barbara.....

You just might have to reinforce

the wall to support the shelves

for all that glitzy hardware
