If Maestro Merle Evans was the most beloved circus bandmaster, none was more colorful than William R. Browning, Jr., who fully earned his nickname, Boom-Boom. As fellow Texans, we hit it off from the beginning. He was born to rule a drum kit. Genial and funny as he could be, he was also quick to defend his talent. Following a particularly vocal incident with his percussion instructor, he was booted out of the University of Texas. Look for Boom in photos of Merle Evans bands, and he drummed on at least 3 of Evans's record albums. After his years on Beatty-Cole, Boom succeeded in a new career, demonstrating and selling for Slingerland Drums, while still heading up circus bands until the end. Musicians know the difference between a drummer and a show-drummer, and I'm proud to remember that my friend Boom was tops in his line.
