In this scene [Ben Hur and Messala] skid around the end
of the spina and head down the straightaway with Ben Hur’s team on the inside
and Messala’s team slightly to the outside but running even with the Arabian
whites.

It is not Circus, BUT I found it fascinating, amazing, and very interesting.

It is OLD OLD circus.
Lots of performances closed with races of all types and chariot races at the end. These lasted up into the 30's on the railroad shows with you seeing some still on a few truck shows into the 40's and 50's.
Modern day rodeos still carry this on in the form of chuck wagon racing.
