Mack told me that despite having been established on the Ringling Show he had no idea how to train a young elephant, his experience limited to old timers that actually taught him. When Bud Anderson hired him to train these three youngsters "Modoc", "Empress" and "Judy" (seen collared together at the Anderson quarters) he was completely in the dark and sometimes would regale me with stories of trying to figure how to lay out rigging that sometimes went up to the rafters then out the window to a truck. Fortunately Matt Laurish seen in front, was on the show and gave him pointers he had seen done on other shows. Thru trial and error and hard work this eventually became the well known Dolly Jacobs elephant act.
