There is no information in the film’s credits or in the Internet Movie Database to identify the lion and its trainer. Assignments like this were usually handled by Mel Koontz and his lion “Jackie.” Several photos of Jackie have been posted on Buckles’ Blog over the years, which can be used for a comparison.
This lion has always looked VERY old to me and appears to be almost, if not completely, toothless, which does not mean I would want to sit next to him however.
The hairline, the facial structure, and the light mane do suggest one of Mel's Jackie's. Outlines of manes can change slightly, but the nose leather is the true ID factor--like fingerprints, no two are ever alike.
