Jackie Cooper was in the Navy beginning in World War
II. Initially, he played drums in a unit
band fronted by Dennis Day that toured in the Pacific. Later, when he was doing the TV series
HENNESEY (about a Navy doctor) he was asked to come back on board
as a Navy spokesperson. A licensed
pilot, he also got to fly various Navy aircraft including some of the latest
jets that were being used back then. He
retired as a Captain and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery. This photo of me with Captain Cooper was
taken in 1987 at the Naval Reserve Armory in Chavez Ravine in Los Angeles (which
had a long association with those Hollywood stars that had served in the
Navy.) The Armory had just been
designated as an historical building, and I took a video crew from my Navy
Reserve Combat Camera unit to obtain footage of the ceremony for Navy News
This Week.

Jackie Cooper appeared in at least one circus film: O’SHAUGHNESSY’S BOY (1935) in which he played the son of wild animal trainer Wallace Beery. Early in the film, Beery loses an arm when he is attacked by one of his cats. He later returns to the big cage to present a tiger riding on an elephant. At a critical moment in the act, when it looks like Beery is losing control of the tiger, Jackie’s encouragement from outside the cage inspires Beery to make the tiger do his bidding. (If this film ever becomes available on DVD, frame enlargements will be posted on Buckles' Blog.) Jackie Cooper also directed a made-for-TV film starring Mickey Rooney as a clown with a terminal illness.
The earliest film I ever saw was
"Treasure Island" with Wallace
Beery as Long John Silver & with
Jackie Cooper as Jim Hawkins
It also had an actor named Chic
They had an interview with Jackie Cooper on TCM.
Jackie said he did not have a father and tried to have Wallace Berry as one and Berry wanted no part of him and just shoved him to the side.
Berry just looked ruff in his movies and maybe the same way off camera.
