On January 15, 1973, the ceasefire went into effect that
ending the Vietnam conflict. To mark the
occasion, the four aircraft carriers operating in the Gulf of Tonkin steamed in
a battle formation for an aerial photograph.
(A formation with this many carriers hadn’t been done since World War
II.) Those of us not on watch went
topside to see this remarkable occurrence.
(That’s me, leaning on the ship’s rail.)
