I remember Gary stopping by the Big Apple lot in Reston, VA for a brief visit, mid-90s. He had Smokey and Ardvark with him at that time. Good times then at Pee Wee's breakfast club!
Just before my time there, the Cen-Tex Zoo, in Waco, obtained a very young elephant--I never knew their source. Everything that happened next demonstrated the worst of those with no knowledge. They laid the elephant down and chained it to the open floor of a flat-bed trailer for the long drive in bitter cold weather. Upon arrival in Waco, they removed the chains and the elephant couldn't move. At the time, Smokey was known from the feature article in TRUE magazine, and they summoned him from his brief stint at Six Flags, in Arlington, Texas. Smokey was angered at the elephant's condition, and lost his temper when told how she had been trucked in. He cursed everyone involved, advising them in his own terms that they had put the elephant in critical condition, and as he was detailing his contempt for them, the elephant died. The Waco staff gave Smokey respectful distance until he left them humiliated with an elephant to bury.

Besides you and Jim, who else is in the photo?
Myself, Buckles, Scott Riddle, Gary Jacobson and of course, Smokey.
