For some reason, silent films with religious themes such as BEN-HUR and THE KING OF KINGS were able to include scenes showing nudity or near-nudity, orgies, suggestive dancing and all manner of debauchery and still make it passed the censors.
Indeed. In DeMille's 1934 CLEOPATRA, suggestive is a mild term for the steamy choreography of the slave girls in a hot number C.B. unabashedly called his "Lesbian Dance."
