King of Kings #1 (From Eric Beheim)

The following frame enlargements are from Cecil B. DeMille’s 1927 blockbuster film THE KING OF KINGS. (This and the following images showing Mary Magdalene (Jacqueline Logan) and her pet leopard are not unlike some of the photos we’ve seen of Barbara and her leopards.)

Even with the leopard’s trainer standing close at hand, there must have been a certain amount of risk involved in filming this scene, especially if DeMille tried the leopard’s patience by requesting numerous retakes.

My first thought on leopards for a DeMille epic goes to Olga Celeste as trainer. She may have been, but IMDb's "full cast and crew" list credits no one for the task. Olga is listed as an uncredited Slave Girl in DeMille's 1934 CLEOPATRA, which starred Claudette Colbert. The full list also names Ecki as the leopard, with no screen credit. One has to know Olga Celeste was the famed Enchantress of Leopards to connect her with Ecki and with celluloid enslavement to old C.B. The eagle-eyed film buff will enjoy looking for another uncredited actor who later scored a Best Actor Oscar--but here remained almost inconspicuous as an extra named David Niven.
