It's All Been Done Before!

April 15-21.
Booked solid that year, closed the season after concluding the Texas dates and returned to Hugo to discover my mother had purchased a home near downtown Hugo.
A month later after finally getting all his circus periprnalia placed away, my father died.

If its been done before it would have to be a very fine trainer and act to be both in the photo and the route.

During the 1963 Omaha date, there was an accident that took the life of Yetta Wallenda as she performed a sway pole act.

I've heard of a lady aerialist knowing she was in a fatal fall, who posed herself on the way down in graceful style. It was said she wanted to go out as a true performer, and also to keep her fall from being so traumatic to the audience. Could this story have applied to Yetta Wallenda?

Barbara witnessed the whole event and is convinced she blacked out since she tumbled forward and fell effortlessly.

Question about your mom and dad's house, was this their first "permanent" residence? I was wondering how his collection of circus memorabilia was situated before this home.

Yetta and I were always the last ones to leave the dressing room. I had a costume that I made special for the roman ride on the two elephants at the back of the long line of bulls on the dates . It was white rhinestones by the yard. And floor length fringe, white also & the head piece that I had on in the photo with "Clyde Beatty." "Yetta" would always fix my hair. She would always say this costume is so special, your hair has to be just right too. Then she told me she had been having dizzy spells. And that she was going to go to the Dr. to see what was wrong. She said she guessed it might be the start of menopause. I missed her so much. She was a wonderful person. (The costume I had on in the photo with Clyde Beatty was not the costume I was talking about. Only the headpiece.).....Barbara.....

I believe that Henrietta Place

in Sarasota that led to Ludwig

Maschino's trailer park was in

honor of "Yetta" Wallenda

Of course Carla's daughter was

named in her honor as well as

I believe Carla was pregnant at

the time of the fall in Omaha

& working on the Beatty Show in

Commack with Paul Jordan when

a call came in to her on the

pay phone in the front lobby

Henrietta's sister Helen was

Karl's 2nd wife & she was also

married to Karl's half brother

the late Arthur Grotefent

Chic Silber said...

That would make "Yetta" Carla's

aunt from both sides

Of course I meant that "Yetta"

was married to Arthur not Helen

John Herriott said...

Her name was Henrietta Kreis [madan] When she married Arthur it was Grotefent. She and Helen Wallenda were sisters. She was aqlways calloed Yettie. Their brother Philip was also in the first 7 people and was killed in a road accident making a jump.Actually he was Marios father.

Mario was then adopted by Karl

& he was crippled in the fall

in 62 & later became a teacher

(yes of course it was Yettie &

not Yetta my mistake)

Karl Wallenda's first wife was Martha, who later married Dr. J.Y. Henderson. Tragically, Martha committed suicide aboard the RBB train, during a stop, when Doc was outside walking their dogs. He returned to discover her, and the tragedy was compounded when Doc went into a long debilitating decline that took him years to survive.
