Hugo joined the Ringling Show with the five Hagenbeck Zoo elephants John North had purchased "Kernaudi", "Minyak", "Mudu", "Sabu" and "Icky" in Pittsburgh June 20 1947.
This picture taken six days later upon the arrival of "Emily" added no doubt due to his expertise with African elephants.
Fred Logan was on the show at the time working for Richard Shipley and told me many stories of the obsticles and altercations Hugo confronted due to the anti-German feeling of the day.
Consequently he and the five elephants he had brought plus "Emily" and "Sudan" (an adult African on the show since 1936) were all shipped to Sarasota in early August after which everyone was informed that he would be in charge of the herd the following season.
