It is kind of sad that a number of elephant trainers have been inducted in the Circus ring of fame and Hugo with his amazing longivity and these pictures can attest to his marvelous training and three ring presentations of exceptional notr, has not been recognized.Too bad.He had a great European career before coming to our shores.I guess he did not take the Dale Carnegie course, but as a long time friend and associate I can assure you that he was a very personable and pleasant to be around. He had a number of sincere friends.
It was either '59 or '60 when I was in school and cut classes to visit back stage at MSG. It was in the morning prior to the matinee and the elephants were being run around the track. They didn't exit when Otto gave the command and picked up speed as they made one more trip around. Being a dumb kid, I flattened myself against the tunnel wall that exited the arena. They ran by with Otto giving them what for in German and the other men yelling orders.Except for some dust,I came through unscathed. I was shaking when I sat in one of the sets and Otto came by and sat next to me. In his thick German accent he said,"You're one lucky guy". From then on any time he saw me it was the same greeting, "You're one lucky guy" and a smile. I always appreciated his friendliness. Bob
It doesn't pay to talk and type at the same time. Sorry about the error...I meant Hugo but was talking about Otto Goldschmidt to someone in the room. My bad. Bob
