How true. some very good and some not par excellence. This was in the latter category and was unusual. Mainly it suffered because a "bull hand" was necessary along with the presenter in the act. I elieve this photo shows Clyde and his wife but this was not the case generally. But it garnered alot of PR.johnny

My favorite tiger & horse act

was when Adolph Althoff came

in the late 60s or early 70s

before Franz & then Evy had it

as it was the 1st I ever saw

Of course Evy was best looking

I believe this is W K "Cap" Bernardi with Harriet in this shot.

Good observation about the bullhand. I sure appreciate learning from your keen observation and thay's why I've always enjoyed a visit with you Johnny. Thanks so much.

Jimmy Reynalds and some other hands have told about how weird it was to be leading the elephant and still having to look back with the catsw right on top of your shoulders and snarling away.

Ole Whitey's right. This isn't Clyde Beatty. Arky Scott was among the men leading this Anna May, for whom our legendary Woodcock elephant was named. Eddie Allen was instrumental in developing this act, as he describes teaming with the Beattys on pp. 42-44, of FUN BY THE TON, his book with Bev Kelley. In his list of Cole-Beatty 1937 elephants, following p. 52, he describes Anna May as then "14 years old, 4300 pounds. Performing. Well-formed, intelligent, gentle. Carries Beatty's lion and tiger."
