From Dave Price

This is the first circus act Clyde Beatty ever worked. The hippo is young Victor, the show is Gollmar Bros, the year 1922 and the clown Abe Goldstein.

Victor had come from the National Zoo to the 1921 Howe's Great London, which was renamed Gollmar Bros for 1922. With most of that show Victor went to the 1923-1924 Robinson show and eventually to Hagenbeck-Wallace. Richard Reynolds called Victor the stud of Peru where he sired Chester. Maybe Richard will jump in with more data.

Abe Goldstein told me the act consisted of his going around the hippodrome track and the hippo catching up with him and biting him on the posterior. Fast forward about thirty years and Abe worked for Beatty in the rail show days.
