Over the years Lou's headpiece

(bald pate with yak hair) got

more pointed & eggshaped as

seen in more recent photos

There were two wigs. This one had to be used for the midget car. George Wallenda helped Lou by installing a washing machine motor for power, and by cutting down the mock-ups until the car was finally the smallest possible version we remember. Lou had the biggest shoes in clowning, according to the Bradna book, and by the time he contorted his 6-foot frame inside with them, he could barely see. The conical headpiece would not work in the car. Thus, the piece in these photos. Bradna has Lou in this star turn, which was at last perfected for the 1948 season, plus 5 walkarounds, for which he set aside the piece used in the car, and donned the high conical headgear, also painted with the ready-made arched eyebrows, and sporting the red yak hair. The alternating wigs both were seen in their own places in Lou's performances.
