When I wasw six yrs. old my father was a keeper in the National zoo in wash dc under direction of Dr. William Mann. One of the charter members of the CFA. I assume this taken on the lot in Wash and around that time [37-38] We see Sam Gumpertz, who was operating the show at that time, with Dr. Mann, plus Robt. Ringling, and trainer Bill Emory plus the head keeper at the zoo, namely William Blackman for many yrs. at the zoo and formerly Menagerie supt. of the Barnum and Bailey circus. I remember my father pointing out Mr Blackburn during one of his walk thrus of the large animal barn my father worked in. Dr. Mann and his wife were always very gracious to our family during nthose times. A wonderful memory.johnny
Dr. Mann makes a cameo appearance in DeMille's TGSOE where, dressed in a suit, he is seen leading an elephant during the sequence showing the train being unloaded.
Note elephant Babe. I suspect this was taken in 1934 when the show gave a Babe elephant to the National Zoo. At the time some including Dr Mann thought she was the Babe/Babylon who had been with Ringlings since 1888 but some researchers now believe it was Sells Babe that they gave to the zoo. She had been acquired with the Forepaugh-Sells show.
