Cigar Store Indians #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Under the general category of “show carvings” is the subcategory of carved wooden advertising figures. Under this category are the carved wooden figures once used by tobacco shops to advertise their wares. More often than not, these figures were Indians. Here are a few vintage photos showing cigar store Indians.

These carvings were done in the same shops and by the same carvers that produced the carvings used on circus parade wagons.

When I was a boy there was still a cigar store Indian in front of a tobacco store on Fifth Avenue right in the heart of town.

I remember it was on wheels and pushed inside at night.
