figures once used by tobacco shops to advertise their wares. More often than not, these figures were

These carvings were done in the same shops and by the same carvers that produced the carvings used on circus parade wagons.
When I was a boy there was still a cigar store Indian in front of a tobacco store on Fifth Avenue right in the heart of town.
I remember it was on wheels and pushed inside at night.
In some cases but not all.
