This is Jean Allen . She made my career possible. I really loved this this woman. She was certainly not gentle. But she was great. She was a fantastic performer. She could work tough elephants when the bull men backed up from them. "Lucy" would get mad in the center ring act, and just back up to the back of the ring. And they would send for "Jean Allen" out on the concessions. She would step into the ring and "Lucy" would go on with the act. It was something to see. That was the first time I ever saw a woman work an elephant by herself. I didn't remember my mother working an elephant that we had on our show for a time. I think that elephant's name was "Rubber." When "Jean Allen" would have me do a mount and I would start to fall she would hit me (with the rounded bull hook handle) on the rear and knock me back up on to the mount. "Jean Allen & "Louie Reid" taught me. He was just as tough. What they taught me stayed with me. Beside "Jean working bulls. She also did The Waltz & Rear Horse. I could never thank Jean or Louie for the training they gave me. It was not their job. I think they saw how much I wanted it....Barbara.....
