Right at the time Pat was working on our horses, the merchants of San Diego’s Mission Hills neighborhood staged “Catch the Brass Ring,” a 3-day, carousel-themed street fair intended to raise funds to help beautify the business district. One of this event’s featured attractions was an “artist in wood” who demonstrated how carousel figures were carved in the old days. |

This is either Chris or Joe Case whose local woodworking company specialized in museum-quality restorations of antique wooden furniture. The Case Bros. also repaired wooden carousel figures, carving new legs, tails, etc. as needed. (They made the necessary repairs to our horses, which were in pretty sorry shape when we first acquired them.)
What kind of wood is used? Just curious.
I believe that many of the old carousel figures were made of basswood.
