The Chariot Race #6

Messala also made it onto the cover of the sheet music for The Ben-Hur Chariot Race, a piece that was frequently played by theater orchestras and circus bands whenever a lively march was needed.

In 1969 during his last season with the Ringling-Barnum Circus, Merle Evans programmed THE BEN-HUR CHARIOT RACE for Gunther’s Roman Riding number. (Merle might very well have used this same number in a similar capacity during his first season with Ringling-Barnum back in 1919!)

Percy Turner once told me that he had heard THE BEN-HUR CHARIOT RACE being played in a silent movie theater for a newsreel showing some battleships passing in review. In addition to the sheet music, it was also a big seller as a player piano roll.
