More odds & ends #8

In C.B. DeMille’s TGSOE, the locomotive fireman who shouts out the first warning that the second section is about to plow into the rear end of the first section is played by veteran character actor Fred Kohler, Jr. His single-scene appearance is an example of DeMille casting a small role in one of his pictures with an actor who had worked for him previously.

Fred Kohler Jr. broke into pictures in 1929 while still a teenager. In the mid-1930s he starred in a few independently-produced B-westerns including TOLL OF THE DESERT, which is considered by many to be a classic of the genre. He first worked for DeMille in 1944 and thereafter had small roles in every one of DeMille’s pictures including THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. He also did a lot of television work (including appearances in the CIRCUS BOY TV series.)
