Most of you probably remember the 114th Edition TV special, when Gunther sang a duet with guest host Barbara Mandrell. (The whole show was done like one big music video and just about everyone on staff had to sing, even Bill Pruyn!) (TO BE CONTINUED) |

What a great group of pictures and it sure is an insight to the amazing Gunther. A true "workaholic" to be sure. He had a very little "social life" Up early and on the go all day. He personally supervised every project. What a guy. Thanks Buckles
Market research apparently convinced the Felds that Gunther’s target audience should be young adults in their 20’s. To appeal to that audience, they took great pains to insure that his costumes and hairstyles were not unlike those of a rock star, and that the music he performed to included the current pop tunes and the themes from the latest hit movies and TV shows. (The whole Red Unit performance was eventually geared to that same target audience.) Despite the Felds’ best efforts to make Gunther a pop culture icon, one wonders if he is as well-remembered today BY THE GENERAL PUBLIC as is Emmett Kelly or the Wallendas. Given the fickle nature of fame, I doubt it.
I believe the Gebels and Barbara Mandrell remained good friends for many years.
Eric I would take a wild guess and say that if they remember anyone in Circus for the past 50 years it would be Gunther, Emmett and the Wallendas nothwithstanding...and let's not forget that Nick Wallenda has done and is doing a heckuva job keeping the Wallenda name out there as well as Circus.
I thank you again for all your great contributions to the blog and of course Buckles for keeping so very much out there for all to enjoy.
