For some 2 years before closing, the Hertzberg Circus Collection displayed a photo from the Tom Scaperlanda donation of Ben Davenport looking much the same as here, labeled underneath as John Ringling North. Being among those offering correction, I was told by the curator, who evinced a deep sigh, "Oh, yes, people insist on telling us these things." And when the Hertzberg went into crates for eternal repose in another museum's basement, many such mislabelings went with it--believe me. I had not relied on the old saying, "Never try to wise up a chump."
