At one time, the “Horse Personalities Parade” included a contingent of “pit ponies” (i.e. a type of pony that was commonly used underground in coal mines from the mid-18th until the mid-20th century.) As the pit ponies were led into the arena, the house lights would be lowered so that the only illumination came from the lamps on the helmets of the leaders. |
