The old Hipp was greatly remodeled to accommodate Jumbo, which made it possible for Cole Bros to play there in 1937.
The Hippodrome was on Sixth Ave in the block south of the Algonquin Hotel of round-table fame. At one point it was called Keith's Hippodrome, but I don't know if B F Keith built it. Chic: How about it?
The Hippodrome Theater stood in New York City from 1905 to 1939
The Hippodrome was built by Frederick Thompson and Elmer Dundy, creators of the Luna Park amusement park at Coney Island. The theater was located on Sixth Avenue, between Forty third and Forty fourth streets. Its auditorium seated 5,300 people and it was equipped with what was then the state of the art in theatrical technology.
The theater was acquired by The Shubert Organization in 1909. In 1923 the Hippodrome was leased to Keith Albee, which hired Thomas Lamb to turn it into a vaudeville theatre by building a much smaller stage and discarding all of its unique features. The most popular vaudeville artists of the day, including illusionist Harry Houdini, performed there. In 1918, on a brightly lit stage Houdini made a 10,000 pound elephant disappear. He created a sensation. When Houdini fired a pistol, Jennie vanished from view.
