Circus World #54

Although CIRCUS WORLD ends on a note a triumph, it turned out to be a box office flop that helped to sink producer Samuel Bronston's short-lived career as a film mogul. If you missed it back in 1964, it is now available on DVD, although watching it on a small TV screen won’t give you the same experience as seeing it in a Cinerama theater.

Although John Wayne was usually very careful to give his fans the Duke they expected, the character he played in CIRCUS WORLD was rather subdued. (He doesn’t throw a single punch in the entire film!) And most of the challenges he has to confront are of the soap opera variety, requiring an endless amount of dialogue to resolve.

Adding to CIRCUS WORLD’s other woes, right when it was in release, Paramount re-issued DeMille’s THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH which took away most of its business.

Even CIRCUS WORLD’s main title theme, by noted film composer Dimitri Tiomkin sounds “mournful.”

I remember that when this picture came out I didn't have the slightest interest in seeing it.
My buddy Jimmy Rossi said it was pretty grim.
I was more concerned about what Marlon Brando was going to come up with next.

With apologies for stating the obvious, you can never beat or even equal the sights sounds and smells of The Circus, especially back in those days.

A little bread and Circus has been doing it for thousands of years.

It must be something going around

Paul as the mayor of Toronto has

just apologized for smoking crack

& our president is apologizing

for the bad rollout of Obamacare

& now it's your turn to apologize

What do you call a corrupt lawyer?

Senator.

I eschew (no I didn't sneeze) politics.

Aren't you from New Jersey Paul

where I'm told the state has the

most toxic waste sites as apposed

to New York that has the highest

numbers of attorneys per capita

& the reason for that discrepency

is that Jersey got to pick first

A little late to respond, but

Funny thing Paul but I'm in

Joysee right now (11P Sunday)

My new favorite hotel is the

Newark Penn Station Hilton

I think the NJ Transit 16 minute

train I just took from NY Penn

Station (for the senior fare of

2.25) might have crossed that

river between Secaucus & Newark

Attended a Local 1 Stagehands

meeting this morning & visited

several theaters before meeting

friends for dinner at a favorite

Spanish restaurant downtown

I'll be flying home Tuesday
