During the closing credits, the camera picked up Merle Evans (lower right) leading the band. 1961 marked Merle’s return to Ringling after a 5-year absence. (Someone who knew Merle once told me that he only agreed to come back because the show was once again traveling on its own train.) |

The playout music used for the closing credits was TGSOE Movie Theme.
Thanks, Eric, for finding and sharing this. It was the first year I saw the Ringling show. My mother and I made the trip to NYC just to see this show since I was a budding circus enthusiast who'd already been receiving White Tops and Bandwagon. I remember we stayed at the St. Moritz on Central Park (wow!) and I collected a number of autographs in my program including Merle Evans and Trevor Bale. I had just read "Here Keller, Train This" but the Professor had just died and his assistant was presenting the act. Only photo that came out given the darkness and distance in the Garden was one of Lou Jacobs pushing his baby carriage.
Gimbels department store in NYC had a big circus history display from the Ringling Museum that we saw and the designer at Gimbels gave me some leftover current posters for the show that he did not use in the exhibit. He later sent me Bill Ballantine's "Wild Tigers and Tame Fleas," one of the best circus books done and I read that several times.
Thanks again.

The REAL reward for posting a series like this comes from reading the comments (and recollections) telling about who and what is shown in the images.
