1961 RBBB TV Special #19

Santos. (In the background can be glimpsed the Zacchini repeating cannon that closed the show. (Apparently the Greensboro arena’s backstage area wasn’t roomy enough accommodate the cannon, so it had to be parked inside the arena and in plan sight.)

The old Cleveland Arena was another tight fit, with narrow entrance tunnels. I can remember watching the tiger cages being pulled in one at a time by members of the big cat crew prior to the start of the performance. Many of the spec floats were too big to make it through the entrance tunnels and had to be eliminated. (To fill in the gaps, Trevor Bale cantered around the hippodrome track on horseback, waving to the audience.) Standing in the narrow tunnels must have also caused some concern to the elephant men, since the elephants would all be brought into the arena to wait for their cue to go on.
