Today's Birthday, And Another Belated Birthday Wish...
September was a good month for wild animal trainers...Today is "America's Own" Wade Burck birthday. Wade turns 59, just a youngin', today. Saturday, September 14th, was another of one of Ringling Brothers great tiger trainers birthdays, Charly Baumann.
When you think about it, how fortunate was Ringling Brothers to have both Gunther Gebel-Williams and Charly Baumann performing at the same time. I am a great fan of Gunther Gebel-Williams, but I have tremendous admiration for Charly Baumann, both as a man, and for his classic and stylish tiger presentation. I again feel very fortunate to also have met Charly Baumann (twice). He too autographed his autobiography, "Tiger,Tiger" for me.
I was reading an article about Charly Baumann online, one that had been published in the UK by "The Telegraph", it summed up in a few words Charly Baumann's talent and his tiger act better then I ever could...
"The hallmark of his act was the balletic grace of his tigers. He liked to display the abilities of the animals rather than his own skill at subjugating them, and he was the first to train four tigers to roll over in the ring simultaneously. He capped this feat the next year with five tigers, and eventually with six. He appeared in the cage with them before circus audiences more than 10,000 times."
Ringling Brothers chose a drawing of a classic pose, Charly Baumann and Kismet, for its program cover in 1966. I believe at its peak, Charly Baumann had sixteen tigers in his act.
Wade is all-American, "America's Own", born and brought up in North Dakota. A first generation circus performer. A fine trainer, Wade had the unenviable task of succeeding Gunther with Ringling Brothers. I wish Wade many more Happy Birthdays.
I hope all is well.

The first time I saw Wade Burck perform was at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, New York. He was with the Hamid-Morton Shrine Circus. It was in the late 70's, or early 80's.
Besides his tigers, Wade also presented elephants, and a natural enemies act, elephants and tigers.
My oldest son, who was three at the time kept calling Wade "Gunther".
Henry if it was the early '80's, would it not have been Hanneford in White Plains?

Henry,
Thank you so much for your kin
d words. One of my most cherished memories, forever engrained in my now feeble mind, is opening night in Venice, in 1984 in the now dismantled circus arena, with Charly Baumann and Gunther Gebel Williams standing back track at the cage door watching to see if I was going to "shit, or get off the pot." A memory that will never be forgotten. Over shadowed only by the memory of returning to the Greatest Show on Earth to begin practicing with GGW's "retired" tiger's in 1991. I was indeed blessed.
Wade Burck
Beatty & Baumann (sounds like a
good show title) best of both kinds
Hi Paul,
There were a couple of years when the County Center hosted two circuses, the Hanneford Circus in February and the Hamid-Morton Shrine Circus in May. Maybe Wade could help with the dates.
The first time I saw Wade he was the Hamid-Morton Circus and sporting blonde hair. It was Wade's tribute to his, and my, hero Gunther.
Paul, do you remember the Pan American Circus? It was the predecessor at the County Center to the Hanneford Circus.
The Pan American Circus is where I saw Guy Gossing and his tigers perform. It is also where I saw the Carrillo Brothers high wire act for the first time. That was long before they moved on to Ringling Brothers.

Hi Wade,
Both Charly Baumann AND Gunther Gebel-Williams watching you perform. how nervous were you? I know you didn't disappoint.
Wade, it is hard to believe that it is over thirty years since the first time I saw you perform!
Henry
I believe it was Don Francisco that
produced the Pan American dates &
I can't remember his real name
Henry,
How nervous? Nervous as a whore in church would sum it up. Charly rated it "between a dismal failure and return to the farm in North Dakota.........."
What great experiences for sure..Charly was always good to me and I am greatful for that.
Henry: Thanks for additional info and yes, I do remember the rest of what you said...thanks to your saying it. H-M blonde hair, where does the time go?
Best, Paul
